Analysis of wastewaters is an invaluable tool to estimate drugs' usage among communities. Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) consists in the quantification of target compounds (pharmaceuticals/metabolites) in influent wastewaters to back-calculate the consumption/exposure rates of a community which contributes to that wastewater catchment (WWTP). This poster showcases the utilisation of WBE as an epidemiology tool aimed at understanding changes to pain killers usage during SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in one WWTP in South West England as they were used to reduce covid symptoms and side effects of vaccine. This study shows that monitoring of pharmaceuticals can be used as a proxy of community health.
